Seventh graders discover reading is giving

As a result of reading 259 books from the start of school through the end of October, Nancy Ivester’s seventh grade class has donated 200 books so far to kids in need. Participating in ClassroomsCare, “Reading is Giving,” a donation program run by Scholastic Book Clubs, the seventh graders are working hard to read as many books as possible by Dec. 31.
For every 100 books they read, Scholastic Book Clubs is donating 100 books in their honor to four charities that serve kids in need: First Book, “I Have a Dream” Foundation, Reach Out and Read, and Save the Children. The class’ name will be listed on the ClassroomsCare Readers’ Hall of Fame list on the official ClassroomsCare Web site (www.scholastic.com/classroomscare).
The donated books are delivered directly into the hands of kids in need. First Book gives new books to children who have little or no access to books of their own. First Book works with existing preschool and after-school programs, including homeless shelters, migrant worker camps, and libraries. The “I Have a Dream” Foundation creates programs for children in low-income communities. Reach Out and Read trains doctors and nurses to provide books to children growing up in poverty and to educate parents about the importance of reading to their children at a very early age. Save the Children works with children and families living in rural America and around the world to make lasting positive change.
