Seven new trustees elected to Board

Darlington School is pleased to announce that seven new members were elected to the Board of Trustees after the spring meeting in early May:
Tommy Betts of Rome, project manager with Polk County Public Service Co., will serve as Parent Council representative as chairman of the Athletic Booster Club. He holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Georgia. Tommy and his wife, Darla, are the parents of two Darlington alumni and one current student. He has been a member of Darlington’s Booster Club for several years.
Steve Brewster (’87) of Rome, president of Bagby Transfer and Store-More Self Storage, will serve as president of the Alumni Council for 2007-08. He holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of Georgia and a master’s from Mercer University. Steve also serves on the Boards of First Presbyterian Church in Rome and the Open Door Home. He is vice president of the Shorter College Round Ball Club and president of the Rome-Area Bulldog Club. He and his wife, Bonnie, are the parents of four current Darlington students.
Laura Harbin Davis (’70T) of Rome serves as Board member and advisory director for Rome Area Council for the Arts and Rome Area History Museum. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Emory University and spent over a decade working for what is now Wachovia Bank. Laura also serves on Board of Open Door Home and is a member of Floyd-Polk-Chattooga Medical Alliance, Garden Study Club, National Society of Colonial Dames and St. Peter’s Church. She and her husband, Ken, are the parents of two Darlington alumni. She is also a former member of Darlington’s Alumni Council.
Paul Erwin of Rome is the founder of Primrose Schools Franchising Company, and has over 30 years of experience in institutional and retail management. He graduated from International Business College and attended Indiana University in Ft. Wayne, Ind. Paul currently serves on the Boards of Primrose School Franchising Company and River City Bank and the Advisory Boards of Harbor House, Boys & Girls Club of Rome, and Chieftain’s Museum. He was also recently appointed to the State of Georgia Board of Juvenile Justice by Gov. Sonny Perdue. Paul and his wife, Marcy, are the parents of three Darlington alumni. He is also a former member of Darlington’s Board of Visitors.
Norman Fletcher served on the Supreme Court of Georgia for over 15 years and was chief justice from 2001-2005. He holds a bachelor’s degree and an LL.B. from the University of Georgia and an LL.M. from the University of Virginia, and is a fellow of the American Bar and the Georgia Bar Foundations and a master in the Joseph Henry Lumpkin Inn of Court. Since his retirement from the Supreme Court in 2006, Justice Fletcher has been of counsel with the local firm Brinson, Askew, Berry, Siegler, Richardson & Davis, LLP. His practice areas are mediation, arbitration, trial and appellate practice. He and his wife, Dorothy, live in Rome.
Emily Hjort of Rome, a former teacher, currently serves as an instructor/evaluator for Rome’s Babies Can’t Wait Intervention Program and a sales representative for CAbi Clothing. She holds a bachelor’s degree from Wesleyan University and a master’s from Valdosta State. Emily is involved in many civic activities in Floyd County, including Good Neighbor Ministries and Rome Area Council for the Arts. She and her husband, Peter, are the parents of a Darlington alumnus and a current student. At Darlington, Emily has served as co-chairperson of the Annual Fund and president of both the Upper School Parents Association and Tiger PRIDE.
Jeff Mauer (’85) of Rome is president of Zartic, a division of Pierre Foods Inc. He holds two bachelor’s degrees from Shorter College. Jeff has served on the Boards of the Boy Scouts of America, Community Criminal Justice Foundation, Georgia Chamber of Commerce, Greater Rome Existing Industries Association, Harbor House, Heritage First Bank, Redmond Regional Medical Center Heart of the Community, Rome/Floyd County YMCA and the YMCA Youth Sports Complex. He is a Leadership Rome alumnus and has volunteered in several capacities with the United Way. Jeff and his wife, Mary Margaret, are the parents of three current Darlington students. He has also served on Darlington’s Board of Visitors.
The following Board members were re-elected: Bill Jordan (’54) of Fort Payne, Ala.; Bill Kelly (’71) of Rome; Bill Watters (’75) of Rome; Jamie Wilson (’72) of Atlanta; and Gardner Wright (’47) of Rome. Returning officers include chairman John Irby (’81) of Atlanta, Ga.; vice chairman Frank Stegall (’62) of Rome; and treasurer Bill Smith (’72) of Atlanta.
Retiring Board members include Mark Manis (’72), Linda Owens (’79), Julius Shaw (’72), Larry Williams (’67), Britta Stern (’94), Dwight Hutchins (’82), Will Enloe (’90) and Nancy Brant.
