Service Over Self: Students Volunteer in Community

The Middle and Upper Schools collected $785 for cystic fibrosis during a community service fundraiser Feb. 15-19.
“I am absolutely elated about our progress,” said Tracy Rucker, community service adviser. “This year, the community service team encouraged middle-schoolers to participate. We also had a stucco day and a competition for the most outlandish hat to raise $65 more than our goal.”
Rucker recognized the following students for their hard work and compassion during Cystic Fibrosis Week: Allen Babcock, Seung Min Choi, Alicia Gamble, Brad Garver, Acquania Gibbs, Mark Henderson, Luis Machuca, and Jessica Ramsaur. Roch Jagiello won the hat competition.
In other community service news, Seung-Min Choi did a presentation of her country, Korea, for the Beverly Healthcare Center in March.
This spring, Dee Perry, Sarah Tumlin, Choi, Ramsaur, and Gamble have been visiting the Parks Recreation Center twice a week where they help elementary students with homework and learning strategies.
Community service volunteers also visited the Atlanta Community Foodbank Saturday, April 17, and participated in a Walkathon for the March of Dimes Saturday, April 24.
The National Honor Society (NHS) also participated in community service projects: the creation of Easter baskets for the Rebecca Blaylock Child Development Center and Easter eggs for a Cedartown-area kindergarten.
Junior Adam Richardson led the Easter basket project, in which baskets were decorated and filled with candy for distribution at Rebecca Blaylock. Also taking part in this community service project were Luke Farmer, Katie Van Es, Cat Lawler, Junko Kurata, Acquania Gibbs, and Morgan McCrary.
John Scott Husser, NHS president, spearheaded the Easter egg project, which served to create hundreds of candy-filled eggs for the children of a kindergarten in Cedartown. Amanda Penn, Alexis Adams, Drew Doss, Emily Conrad, Chris Motley, and Beth Mooney also contributed. The candy and decorations for the projects were donated by Marie Hodge, Rebecca Rhodes, Holly Jarrell, Spencer Warren, Raul Gonzalez, and Page Thomas. The projects are but a part of the National Honor Society’s year-long dedication to service in the community.
