Senior attends top-notch saxophone workshop

Hannah Dodd can play piano, clarinet, guitar and drums, but she spent her summer on the sax. A senior member of Darlington’s Jazz Combo, Dodd was one of 30 musicians in the University of Georgia’s Saxophone Performance Workshop June 17-22, where she studied under sax enthusiasts from around the country.
“Being around other people with similar goals pushes you to work harder because you know there are others who are doing exactly what you are doing,” said Dodd. “At UGA, I was surrounded by people of all skill levels, varying from novice musicians to near professionals. Exposing yourself to this type of environment makes you better, whether it is by instructing a newer player or learning from someone more advanced.”
During the six-day workshop, held in UGA’s Hugh Hodgson School of Music, participants studied the saxophone in all styles of music, classical through jazz. Each student received private instruction from internationally acclaimed faculty members, including Dr. Kenneth Fischer, Dr. John Bleuel and Dr. J. Scott Turpin, all renowned saxophone professors and performers.
Throughout the course of the workshop, participants performed as soloists, in quartets, and in a large saxophone orchestra, involving sopranino, soprano, alto, tenor, baritone and bass saxophones. All students gained performing knowledge on each of the instruments. The week ended with a public performance in UGA’s Ramsey Concert Hall.
“The most interesting part was meeting other people with an equal or greater passion for music,” said Dodd. “A lot of times, you meet people who are indifferent toward music as a whole, but the people at a camp like this truly care about what they’re doing.”
Dodd plans to pursue a career in music, and is currently considering a major in musical therapy and/or music composition. “I’m looking at the University of Georgia, the University of Miami, Arizona State and a few others,” she said. “I intend to go to a music school at a large university so that I can study abroad and gain a wider knowledge of music across the globe.”
The daughter of Teresa and Jay Dodd of Armuchee, Ga., Dodd is a two-time member of GISA Honor Band and a District 7 Honor Band member. She is captain of Darlington’s Drum Line and a member of the Steel Drum Band, the Wind Ensemble, and the Darlington Orchestra.
