The Darlington Parents Association is currently seeking nominations from parents and alumni for the fourth annual Parents’ Choice Award, to be presented to the winner during Faculty Appreciation Week in March.

The cash bonus will be awarded to a member of the Upper or Middle School faculty – teaching, coaching and residential life, or administrative staff – who has worked at Darlington for at least five years and who has shown significant commitment to the School, its mission and students.

The award recipient should be a faithful member of the Darlington community who epitomizes its cooperative spirit and possesses great skill and leadership ability as well as a commitment to the Darlington motto: Wisdom More than Knowledge; Service Beyond Self; Honor Above Everything.

Past winners include Diane Ogletree (’68T), Middle School administrative assistant; Bill King, Upper, Middle and Lower School band director; and Sam Moss, associate headmaster and dean of college guidance.

“When Mrs. Molena was reading the description of the award, I honestly thought she was asking for nominations until I heard my name being called,” said Ogletree, the 2002 recipient. “I was awed and humbled, and yes, I cried. I was overwhelmed by the show of support from the DMS student body and the faculty, and it was very encouraging to receive the support of the parents in this way … There is no way we could do all we do without their support, encouragement and assistance.”

At Headmaster David Rhodes’ suggestion, Ogletree bought something very special (a grandfather clock) with the award money to remind her of all the wonderful “time” spent at the Middle School.

“I saved all of the notes in the bottom of the clock and periodically will re-read some of them,” she said. “I never pass the clock without a special memory of my time here.”

Please send letters of nomination to Darlington Parents Association, ATTN: R. Montgomery, 1014 Cave Spring Rd., Rome, GA, 30161 by Tuesday, March 15. You may also e-mail your nomination to Rebekah Montgomery.
