Second Grade Gets Down and Dirty

Elaine Smith and Lucy Babcock’s second grade classes are learning the rotten truth about garbage. The truth is that garbage and industrial wastes are filling up landfills and making our drinking water impure and hazardous to our health.
Since these students are hungry for knowledge, they will be making garbage pizzas to show the types and quantities of trash that we throw away. The classes will also be working on some ecology projects like making mini-landfills to see what things will or will not decompose.
At the end of the unit, a trip is planned to the Walker Mt. Landfill, the Arrowhead Environmental Education Center, and the Rome/Floyd Recycling Center to learn more about ecology and our environment firsthand.
