Season Generates Performances

Crowds and holiday are often considered synonymous in December, but a crowd should not necessarily hold a negative connotation during the holiday season. At Darlington the season prompts performances by Darlington fine arts students that often lead to large gatherings on campus filled with holiday gladness. This Christmastime was not unlike seasons past in that aspect.
“I was especially touched by the fifth graders’ Christmas performance in the Chapel. It was impressive. Those students exemplified courage and talent. It truly helped to remind me of what Christmas spirit is all about –the birth of our Lord and Savior,” Marit Mniszewski, Upper School faculty, said. “You know, as one grows older, the focus becomes having to find a manner to pay for the gifts and making sure everyone has something. Those children helped to remind me that the holiday is not about giving and receiving, but rather loving and appreciating the gift of life.”
The performers give of themselves and also give up a lot of their time to make these events happen –adding fine arts performance practices to their demanding schedules and balancing their commitments in academics, athletics, family, and, let’s not forget, time for friends.
As is a Darlington tradition, the Festival of Lessons and Carols sponsored by the “Y” Cabinet marked the beginning of the Christmas season, Sunday, Dec. 3. This season’s service was a culmination of efforts by 155 students at the Lower, Middle, and Upper schools and faculty advisers.
The festival includes nine lessons as well as congregational hymns and special music provided by the Concert Choir, Darlington Singers, and Wind Ensemble.
The Chapel, as is customary, was the setting for most of the performances. The Lower School’s Darlington Singers shared their musical compilation with the Upper School, Wednesday, Dec. 6, then the Middle School choirs performed Thursday, Dec. 7.
Upper and Middle school choirs filled the Chapel with their voices at Darlington’s holiday season performance finale, the Traditions of Christmas concert, Dec. 10.
