Science Takes to the Road

Fourth-grade science students made two field trips in May: the annual visit to the Upper School science department on May l7, and a trip to the William Weinman Mineral Museum in Cartersville, Ga., on May 25.
After a study of rocks, minerals, and fossils, the fourth-graders panned for gold, dug for fossils and toured the Weinman Mineral Museum. They concluded the day with a picnic on the museum grounds.
Each year Science Department Chairman Mark Alber plans a morning of fun-filled science activities for the Lower School’s fourth grade. Alber and physics instructors Tim Garrett and Donald Sweeney entertained the students with experiments designed to illustrate that science can be fun as well as educational.
“Most of these students will eventually be in our classes and it pays to get them interested in science at an early age,” Alber said. “Lola Bradshaw and the rest of the Lower School faculty do a great job teaching science fundamentals, and we love having the classes visit. Many of our top science students have come through the Lower School, which is a reflection of the type of background they receive.”
