School year begins with Opening Convocation

To kick off the year, the Upper School held Opening Convocation Monday, Aug. 21, at 8 a.m. in Morris Chapel.
“I truly believe that we here at Darlington in 2006 are at the same sort of powerful, life-changing crossroads that Robert Frost’s speaker describes in his poem, ‘The Road Not Taken,’” said Dr. Mark Carleton, assistant headmaster and director of Upper School. “We need to be about the business of preparing ourselves to make cathartic, counter-cultural and affirming choices. These choices will make all the difference in our individual lives and in the life of Darlington School today, tomorrow and forever.”
Opening Convocation had a formal program featuring the history and ringing of the School Bell by Senior Class President Quincy Price and the recognition of national flags of countries from which Darlington has students, faculty and staff in 2006-07. According to Betsy Awsumb, international student director, the Darlington community represents 25 states and 39 countries (including the United States). This is an increase from 19 states and 24 countries in 2005-06.
Also during the ceremony, Dean of College Guidance Sam Moss (’63) spoke about student government. Leaders from the Honor Council, “Y” Cabinet, House Senate and Discipline Committee represented their individual organizations. Convocation closed with the School Motto, read by senior Anna Krueger, and the singing of the Alma Mater, led by senior Ashley Udell.
Darlington’s opening day enrollment was 937, with 262 Lower School students, 181 Middle School students, 312 Upper School Day students, and 182 Upper School Resident students. This is an increase from an opening day enrollment of 928 in 2005-06.
