School places first in physics contest

Darlington School placed first overall in the 30th Annual High School Physics Contest held Friday, Feb. 3 at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa.
“Several dozen teams from Alabama, Mississippi and Georgia were present, representing large public schools, science and math magnet schools, and private schools,” said Phil Titus, chairman of the science department. “Students competed individually, taking a written exam, and as a four-member team in the ciphering competition.”
Darlington’s A Team included Peter Hjort, Clark McGehee, Ae Prasitmeeboon and Trey Robinson, and the School’s B Team included Young-Hwa Rhee, Spencer Whittingham, Adam Diggs and Nick Lewis. In the very competitive Private Schools Division, the B Team finished ninth and the A Team finished first, scoring 66 out of a possible 80 points. The A Team’s finish was strong enough to place Darlington first overall.
“On the individual written exam portion, Trey and Peter both finished in the top 20 percent; Clark placed in the top 10; and Ae placed second overall, missing only one of the 32 exam questions,” said Titus. “This qualifies Ae for a four-year, in-state tuition scholarship at UA. Thanks to Darlington’s math department for preparing our students so well. Special recognition should go to AP Physics teacher Donald Sweeney for this stellar performance by his students.”
