School patrols keep Lower School students safe

Fifth-graders Dillon Weeks, Asa Crawford and Saahil Patel were selected to participate in the School Safety Patrol Program, sponsored by the Rome Police Department.
“School Safety Patrol membership is an honored position,” said Assistant Principal Diane Lumpkin. “Millions of boys and girls have served since the nationwide movement was started in the early 1920s. Today, more than 500,000 members are on duty each day of the school year, helping classmates.”
According to Lumpkin, patrols set a positive example by knowing and practicing safe walking behaviors, and their job is to remind classmates of the rules without being “bossy.”
“We are proud of these emerging leaders,” she said. “They are doing an important job by keeping their classmates safe. They dress neatly, are always on time, are courteous and polite, and wear their patrol belts and badges proudly.”
Patrol substitutes include Heather Peace, Megan Healy and O'Keefe Johnson.
