School Embraces Mission Statement

Daily activities at the Middle School are evidences of Darlington’s mission statement at work – beliefs that are rooted and have evolved into the foundation of many of their programs. Darlington’s mission statement sets community service as a priority, “… to impart the high calling of service to others.” These words are put into action in Darlington’s sixth, seventh, and eighth grades.
In October, the School sponsored a Stucco Day (students and faculty can pay a dollar to dress outside dress code) to raise money to benefit the American Heart Association.
All Middle School grades are competing to see who can fill the most brown bags to benefit those in need through Rome Urban Ministries. Each bag collected in this well-planned project is expected to feed a family for four or five days. Students are provided with a suggested list of items for the bags, then, if they choose to support this project, they can either purchase the items, work with friends in groups to fill bags, or donate money to purchase the items for the bags. Kroger West is supporting the project by donating half a pound of margarine and a loaf of bread for each bag that Darlington Middle School contributes.
In November, the Middle School begins its annual work with Angel Express, a nonprofit organization that strives to meet the needs of local individuals. Last year Angel Express provided 54 northwest Georgia agencies with gifts and clothing at Christmas for 2,423 of their clients. Students collect new or used toys, books, and clothing to be distributed by Angel Express. All items need to be contributed to Angel Express by Dec. 8. “We will gladly accept donations or good quality items from all grade levels and families,” Nancy Ivester, Middle School instructor and event organizer, said. “Just drop off items at the Middle School or call me for pick up.”
Plans are in the works for the annual Rebecca Blaylock Party, Dec. 5. Each Middle School student brings a new toy to give to a child from Rebecca Blaylock Daycare Center. On the afternoon of Dec. 5, approximately 100 children will come to the Middle School to celebrate the holidays as they visit with Santa and their Middle School friends and enjoy holiday festivities.
