Scholarship recipients send personal thanks

About 30 students, some parents, and family members from the Lower, Middle, and Upper schools gathered in the Briley Lecture Room on the evening of March 19 to write thank-you notes to donors of merit and financial aid scholarships which the students have received to attend Darlington.
The development and admission offices hosted the Gratitude and Grub Party as a way to give donors a chance to hear from students whom they have personally helped. "The party was also a way for the School to recognize the accomplishments of these student scholars," Vicki Vincent, director of development services, said.
In addition to financial aid scholarships, the School awards 10 merit scholarships based on varying criteria. They are:
· The Cornwell Scholarship established in 2000 and awarded to the most qualified resident student male or female from the state of North Carolina regardless of need.
· Amanda Hubbard de Costerd Endowment Fund established in 2000 in memory of Amanda Hubbard de Costerd and awarded first to children of the minister of the First Methodist Church, Rome, Ga., second to children of employees of Jerry G. and Patsy Hubbard or children of employees of Clint Hubbard, and third to children of residents of Floyd County.
· Elson S. Floyd Scholarship established by the Grizzard family in honor of Elson S. Floyd ’74 and awarded annually to one or more Darlington students, either male or female, of African-American descent who possess strong character and good citizenship skills.
· The Robert P. Holding Scholarship, established as a partial tuition award designated for an incoming male or female resident student who has lived in the state of North Carolina for at least one year and who seeks a great academic experience and opportunities to develop strong leadership qualities and to participate in extracurricular activities.
· J. Ross McCain Honor Scholarship awarded to male or female resident students from the Southeast, with Christian backgrounds who display leadership qualities in school and community, and who demonstrate outstanding academic achievements and initiative in their lives.
· The Morris Scholarship established in 2000 by the William S. “Billy” Morris III ’52 family and awarded on a renewable basis on student performance to five boarding students based on their character strength, leadership potential, and academic ability.
Alumni, parents, grandparents, and others can nominate prospective students for these merit scholarships. To nominate a student, contact the admission office at 1-800-36-tiger or e-mail admission@darlingtonschool.org. Once nominated, a student must file an application for admission to Darlington by March 1. The admission process includes testing, transcripts, a personal interview, and all admission forms. A selection committee considers all applicants.
