Scholar Bowl has second win on Channel 2’s High Q

Darlington’s varsity Scholar Bowl beat Dominion Christian High School with a score of 450-355 on WSBTV Channel 2’s High Q competition Tuesday, Jan. 18.
“Our strength has been team captain Payton Bradford; he does a phenomenal job,” said Craig Schmidt, chairman of the history department and Scholar Bowl faculty adviser. “However, this is not a one-person show, and Trey Robinson, Peter Hjort and Brett Henson were also esential for this win.”
Schmidt added that Jacob Malone and Michael Rebman are also valued members of this year’s Scholar Bowl team, but the High Q competition only allows four contestants with no substitutions in a game.
Bradford, a senior, said the team seemed more confident and comfortable than in its previous performance on High Q.
“We functioned like a team more so this time than in October,” he said. “We knew the strengths and weaknesses of each other and worked well on collaborative efforts. The Dominion Christian team was both courteous and intelligent. There were times when we genuinely felt nervous, but our previous experience helped us excel under the pressure.”
Participating schools were selected by lot from teams in Channel 2’s viewing area, according to Schmidt. The competition is played in a tournament-style bracket. Players are asked “This Date in History” questions based on the show’s airdate. This year, Darlington was one of 32 teams selected to participate.
“This is the first time in two years that we have been selected, and two years ago, we lost in the first round,” said Schmidt.
The Jan. 18 program will be broadcast Sunday, Jan. 30 at 7 a.m. Darlington’s Scholar Bowl team will compete in the next round at the end of March.
Additionally, the team recently beat Bremen High School by a score of 480-380 to once again claim the title of Northwest Georgia RESA Champions. All six players competed in this tournament.
