Scholar Bowl brains are unbeatable

The varsity Scholar Bowl has won the six matches leading up to the Scholar Bowl playoffs in January, giving them the sub-region title in Northwest Regional play.
The junior varsity team has struggled this year, finishing their season with two wins, although most of the matches were very close.
The Scholar Bowl has been in existence since the late 1970s. The students wanted a high-energy, intellectual activity and Upper School faculty member George Awsumb was willing to be the team’s coach. Presently, History Department Chair Craig Schmidt is head coach and Awsumb assists him. In years’ past, the team has competed on High-Q (game show hosted by Atlanta’s ABC affiliate WSBTV) and they have won the Berry Invitational (Berry College, Rome, Ga.) and the Northwest Region tournament several times.
A typical match is divided into two halves, with toss-up questions for both teams and bonus questions for the winners of the toss-ups. “The matches are fast and furious,” Awsumb said.
To join the team, students must try out, be quick, and have both significant and trivial knowledge. The varsity members, led this year by senior Padrick Dennis, are seniors: Brandon Deriso, Mojammed Khateeb, Garrett Manis, and Rob Withers, juniors: Charlie Dean, Ritchie Haygood, Paul Maxwell, Zach Norman, Drew Parker, and Adam Peller. The JV team members, led by sophomore Payton Bradford, are sophomores: Nasir Fakhri, Beau Griffith, and Jonathan Lane, and freshmen: Adam Al-Sayed, Jackson Harris, and Nick Lecroy.
“I have met some of the smartest, most confident, cockiest people in the world in Scholar Bowl,” Awsumb said. “It’s great fun, especially when we have a student/faculty competition and the students meet people who are even more….”
