The Darlington Parents’ Association was pleased to award Craig Schmidt this year’s Parents Choice Award during Honors Day on May 25.

“We were so happy to give this award to Craig this year; he is most deserving,” said Jacquelyn Wright of the Parents’ Association. “Beginning in ninth grade, his students are challenged to go beyond their comfort zone and take their academic performance and critical thinking skills to a level they did not know they could achieve. They find it hard, even painful at times, but well worth the effort. It is teachers like Craig Schmidt that make Darlington a great school.”

Nominators felt that Schmidt has distinguished himself as a great teacher, adviser and mentor, encouraging students to learn and enjoy the intellectual life by not only presenting interesting lectures, but also by raising provocative questions.

“He truly cares that his classes understand the subject, and that they develop insight as to the practical applications of history when faced with difficult contemporary issues,” said one parent in her nomination. “Mr. Schmidt takes his evening study hall responsibilities seriously, and is enthused about assisting students no matter what subject or personal issue is at hand. He is interested in student life and in the intellectual, social and moral growth of the many students with whom he is in contact.”

Counseling and mentoring are strengths that Schmidt unselfishly gives every day in developing young adolescents to become worldly and wise young adults.

“He is low key, unflappable, gracious and always in a state of good humor,” the parent added. “This is why he so readily connects with his classes, advisees, and others. Mr. Schmidt is a dedicated ‘master teacher’ and a conscientious role model for his faculty colleagues, students and (even) parents. He is most deserving of the honor of being recognized with the Parents’ Choice Award.”

Each year, the Parents’ Association seeks nominations from parents and alumni for this award, which is in its fourth year of existence. The recipient is a member of the Upper or Middle School faculty – teaching, coaching and residential life, or administrative staff – who has worked at Darlington for at least five years and who has shown significant commitment to the School, its mission and students. He or she should be a faithful member of the Darlington community who epitomizes its cooperative spirit and possesses great skill and leadership ability as well as a commitment to the Darlington motto: Wisdom more than Knowledge; Service beyond Self; Honor above Everything.

Past winners include James Hutchins, Reba Barnes, Diane Ogletree (’68T), Bill King and Sam Moss (’63).
