Schecter earns junior title

When the dust settled after the Boys 18 title match, rising senior Michael Schecter was still standing. After a grueling finals match with Michael Loncandro that went to three sets, Schecter pulled out a 6-3, 1-6, 6-2 win in the Boys 18 draw of the Georgia Junior Challenger at the Rome-Floyd Tennis Center, wrapping up a busy week for Schecter.
"I was really pleased," Schecter said. "It was a very good tournament and it helped me start off the summer strong. The finals was definitely the toughest match. The guy was a great player and I was pleased to win."
Schecter entered the tournament as the No. 2 seed and Locandro made an impressive march to the finals as a No. 5 seed.
"I was frustrated after losing the second set, and I talked to [my coach]," Schecter said. "He coached me well, told me what I needed to do and it worked. I went out strong and ended up winning."
Schecter said he had a tough semifinals match, which he won 6-4, 6-2, and felt relieved to be in the finals.
"Really throughout the tournament I had a lot of confidence," he said. "Even losing the second set in the finals, I was confident I'd do well in the end."
Schecter got a bye in the first round of the Junior Challenger before beating 32nd seed Joseph Holzman 6-0, 6-1. In the third round, he beat No. 16 seed Tory Martin 6-0, 6-2 and defeated Matthew Holland in the quarterfinals 6-0, 6-3.
After his victory, Schecter, who has been involved with tennis since age 5, headed to Arkansas for the June 17 Southern Closed tournament in Little Rock. Unfortunately, he lost to Zachery Taylor 6-3, 6-0 in the fourth consolation round of the Boys 18 draw.
