Safety Patrols go to Washington

Lower School Safety Patrols Asa Crawford, Saahil Patel and Dillon Weeks traveled to Washington, D.C., in March as part of the School Safety Patrol Program sponsored by the Rome City Police Department.
The annual week-long trip to Washington, D.C., is the Police Department’s way of saying “thank you” to the patrols for their leadership in helping keep classmates safe at school.
“Asa, Saahil and Dillon are at school each day by 7:25 a.m. to help ensure a safe campus,” said Lower School Assistant Principal Diane Lumpkin. “Regardless of the weather, these three are ready, wearing their specially designated belts and carrying their flags.”
Students visited war memorials, the Holocaust Museum, the Washington Monument, Jefferson and Lincoln Memorials, National Archives, Ford Theater, Pentagon, Arlington Cemetery, Mount Vernon, the Capitol and the White House.
“All of the boys had a great trip and loved being in D.C.,” said Lumpkin. “Their collective favorite thing was touring the Smithsonian, and they said taking a week off from school wasn’t too bad either!
“School Safety Patrol membership is an honored position,” she continued. “Millions of boys and girls have served since the nationwide movement was started in the early 1920s. Today, more than 500,000 members are on duty each day of the school year, helping classmates. We are so glad that the Lower School is a part of this program, and we are especially proud of this year’s patrols.”
