Response illustrates peer admiration

Routinely, when soliciting story ideas for “Lakeside Lines,” I e-mail a deadline reminder to Darlington’s faculty, administrators, and staff. Since we often forget that our routines may not be so routine to others, I include suggestions and examples to jolt memories and hopefully generate story ideas. The responses I received from the October request made me mindful of the high degree of admiration individuals at Darlington have for one another.
Instead of writing separate news articles about these individuals, I think the suggestions that I received tell a more poignant story –one of strong peer admiration and awareness within the Darlington community: -- Merritt Newton, Lakeside Lines editor
Lakeside Lines solicitation for story ideas: Do you know of a coworker or student who deserves recognition? What about an awesome classroom activity or learning experience? Know of any community service endeavors to highlight? Have you seen someone exemplifying the School’s motto? …
Responses: This would be a good time to recognize some of the things Brian Boone does for the boarding students, wouldn’t it? He is always doing nice things for them. He remembers their names, takes time to visit, and encourages and supports them. He is truly their friend. –Karen Rieley, director of communications and marketing
I’m not sure how to do it but Betsy and George Awsumb are in our thoughts and prayers a lot lately. Betsy shows such strength and grace under the strain. We have several other faculty members who are facing difficulties and other health problems. They all deserve strength and courage awards. Perhaps you may find a way to express our admiration. –Charlotte Patton, head librarian, Darlington Library
I would like to put in Karen Rieley [director of communications and marketing] for this. She does an outstanding job and I would love to see her recognized. She has been extra special to our department since I have been here and she always gets the job done (of course that goes without mentioning the team that she has behind her).
One other person that does an outstanding job, as a teacher, is Beth Smith [Lower School]. She goes way beyond her cal of duty as a pre-kindergarten teacher. She keeps updated weekly pictures on the Web site for the parents to enjoy and she is also very informative about things that are going on within the classroom. From a parent perspective, it doesn’t get any better than her. –Mandy Foote, gift officer for reunion giving
