Darlington will host its annual Alumni Weekend celebration Friday through Sunday, Oct. 12-14. The weekend will celebrate class years ending in 2 and 7.
“Since it was such a hit last year, we will again be pairing our Alumni Weekend activities with Darlington’s annual Fall for the Arts celebration and Parents Weekend,” said Vicki Vincent, director of alumni relations. “Our Alumni Council members and class agents have worked very hard to offer a weekend full of opportunities for our alumni to reconnect with friends and return to our beautiful campus to witness all the exciting transformations that have taken place. I want to encourage everyone to join us in October. You won’t want to miss it!”
Friday’s activities will feature a Distinguished Alumnus Luncheon and Darlington Celebration honoring Nancy Smith Hunter (’65T) and The Hon. Don Maddox (’59). From noon to 4 p.m., alumni are invited to see a variety of performances by Darlington’s talented students at the annual Fall for the Arts Festival, held at the Thatcher Hall Courtyard (at the Middle School). The evening will kick off with a Pre-Game Picnic on Morris Chapel Lawn at 5:30 p.m., followed by the Homecoming football game vs. Christian Heritage at Chris Hunter Stadium. At halftime, all alumni are invited up to the Huffman Center’s Yancey Suite for refreshments.
The entire community is invited to participate in our second Run With PRIDE 10K, 5K and Fun Run sponsored by Tiger PRIDE (Darlington’s Parents' Association) on Saturday morning; the race will begin at 8 a.m. from the Huffman Center. Alumni and student artwork will be on display in Thatcher Hall’s Ledbetter Commons (at the Middle School) from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Former Darlington lacrosse players will get together from 10 a.m. to noon to celebrate 20 years of LAX at Darlington with an alumni game and clinic for alumni children. At 11 a.m., all alumni are invited to meet at the girls' dorm, Thornwood House, as the alumnae of Thornwood School dedicate Thornwood Hall. A forum with Darlington’s administration will follow the dedication. After an Alumni Cookout on the Morris Chapel Lawn at noon, students will give campus tours by the Lakeside.
Golden Tigers and Thistles, alumni who have been out of school for 50 or more years, will be honored at a 4 p.m. reception at the Home-on-the-Hill, to be followed by an Alumni Cocktail Party at the same location, which will begin at 5 p.m. (Please note that all class photos will be taken during the Cocktail Party, so check the schedule online to determine what time your class’s photo will be made.) All class reunion parties will be held after the Alumni Cocktail Party at various locations. Additional events planned for the Thornwood Classes of 1962 and 1972 are detailed in the Alumni Weekend invitation, which should be arriving in mailboxes soon.
The weekend’s activities will conclude Sunday with a Service of Remembrance in Morris Chapel followed by a J. Daniel Hanks Sr. (’27) Heritage Society Luncheon in Dodd Banquet Room at noon.
