By Alan Parish - FF/S
Tomorrow, Darlington will host the Region 6A Cross Country Championship. The varsity boys will compete at 10 a.m., the varsity girls at 10:40, and the JV combined race will be at 11:20. Awards will follow at noon. The races start and end on the Neville Soccer Fields.
The top four teams and top six individuals qualify for the GHSA State cross country championship, held Nov. 5 in Carrollton, Ga. This will be the largest 6A cross country meet to date, with nine other teams participating: Bowdon, Bremen, Excel Christian, Gordon Lee, Mount Paran, Mount Zion, North Cobb Christian, Trion and Walker.
Darlington has enjoyed much success in Region 6A over the years. The girls will be pursuing their sixth straight Region title. After winning the Region championship in 2008 and 2009, the boys finished runner-up to Mount Paran in 2010 and are looking to regain the title.
Darlington is led by a strong group of seniors who will be running in their final meet on campus. For the girls, Ansley McDurmon and Lindsay Evans are four-year cross country team members. Ansley was individual Region Champion in 2008 and 2009. Lindsay placed 2nd in 2008, and 3rd in 2009 and 2010. Other senior girls running will be Jordan Hutchins, Anna Scoccimaro, Harbin Peek and Rebecca Schenk.
The boys are led senior Jesse Baker, who recently broke Darlington’s all-time 5K record, with a 15:50 at the Asics Invitational on Oct. 8. Jesse was individual Region Champion in 2009, and finished 3rd in 2008 and 2nd in 2010. Other four-year team members are Cam Collins, Sean Healy, Jonathan Tierney and Shan Paracka. Cam has also had great success in past Region meets, finishing 5th in 2008 and 3rd in 2009.
