Reader Profile Series: 'I Don't Get to Read as…

This is the fourth in a series of interviews with Middle School readers. I took on this interview project because I wanted to showcase some of the different reader profiles that I encounter every day in the Middle School library. I will post a new interview in a blog post each week. Some of the interviewees will be self-identified "readers," but others will be non-readers. I won't identify the interviewees here by name. Instead, I'll offer a profile that describes them.

These interviews are intended to offer a small glimpse into the way that kids think about reading.

Those of you who have been following along with this profile series will note that this week's interviewee is the second "older" middle school student (7th or 8th grade) in this reader profile series who has said that she does not read as much as she used to when she was younger because of increased academic and extracurricular responsibilities. I hear similar statements daily from seventh and eighth grade non-readers or former readers.

Do you consider yourself to be a reader?

Yes. I just really enjoy reading. I like escaping to the other world.

How often do you read?

I read pretty much every night thirty minutes to an hour.

Do you read when it’s not assigned for school?

Yes.

What type of books do you like to read?

I like dystopian romances. I just really like how it’s all like techie and the future and it’s all cool stuff, and then, like a little bit of romance thrown in. It annoys me when the girl always rebels and stuff. It’s like, just stay where you are, you’re fine.

What is your favorite book, or your favorite book you’ve read recently?

I like Delirium, Matched, and all those kind of books. And it’s cliché, but I like The Hunger Games a lot.

Where is your favorite place to read?

I like to read someplace comfy, like a comfy chair, but I can read pretty much everywhere.

Paper, or e-reading?

Either.

Anything else you want to say about reading?

I really like reading, but I wish I could read a little bit more like I used to, but with all my school and activities I don’t get to read as much as I used to.
