Reader Profile Series: Fantasy Fanatic

This is the eighth in a series of interviews with Middle School readers. I took on this interview project because I wanted to showcase some of the different reader profiles that I encounter every day in the Middle School library. I will post a new interview in a blog post each week. Some of the interviewees will be self-identified "readers," but others will be non-readers. I won't identify the interviewees here by name. Instead, I'll offer a profile that describes them.

These interviews are intended to offer a small glimpse into the way that kids think about reading.

This week’s interview is with a female student who loves fantasy books and romance books, among other things. She loves to read, although she cannot find as much time for it as she would like because of her schoolwork and extracurricular responsibilities. I believe she sets a fantastic example for us all, though, because she finds time to read. She keeps current on new books and new fantasy series, and it's always a joy for me to see how excited she is when a new book by one of her favorite authors come out. This interviewee is extremely active in sports and other activities, but she illustrates that, when you make something in your life a priority, (like reading), you can find a way to fit it in.

Do you consider yourself to be a reader?

Yes. I love books, and I love all different types of books, and it's really fun to read, for me.

How often do you read?

I try and read as often as I can, it's just with schoolwork--I usually read in the car.

Do you read when it's not assigned for school?

Yes.

What types of books do you like to read?

I love romance and fantasy books.

How do you find new books to read?

I look at the covers. If it looks interesting or cool, or colorful.

What is your favorite book?

My favorite series is the Gallagher Girls series [by Ally Carter]. I like that it's fantasy, but it feels like it's based off of a real person's life.

What is your favorite place to read?

I end up reading in the car. It's usually the car or my bed.

Paper, or e-reading?

Either one I can get my hands on faster.
