Rally, Service and Workshops

Jill Pate has organized a bus to take selected students to participate in Rachel’s Challenge Rally at the Georgia Dome to be held on Friday, Nov. 11. At our upcoming assembly on Tuesday, we will be bringing all of the chains from the classrooms and putting them together in preparation for the event. Letters with all of the details were sent to the parents of the children who will be traveling to the event in Atlanta. Faculty members Theresa Dulaney and Ashley Henry will be chaperones. The entire event will be televised on 11 Alive News (Channel 11) from 10 a.m. to noon.
“Thankful” is our Character Education word for the month of November. To help bring the meaning closer to our students, we are organizing two canned good drives between now and the first week of December. These food drives will benefit two local soup kitchens. More details will be sent home through the classroom teachers and Announcements. We also have our annual Warm Clothing Drive in progress to benefit the children and families at McHenry Primary School. If parents need a tax exempt receipt for large donations, they are available in our school office. Please see Suzanne. As always, McHenry Primary School appreciates the generosity of the Lower School community in helping their families weather the fall and winter months.
As a reminder, please participate in our Mini-Seminars about the 7 Keys to Comprehension. Within the next two weeks, there are three sessions scheduled at 2 p.m. in the Thornwood building.

Our Teaching and Learning Center coaches, Renee Hutchins and Kristin Wilkins, will also participate in these seminars. Through these Mini-Seminars, we are providing parents with knowledge to help their children develop excellent reading comprehension skills.
Please make a note on your calendar – Nov. 9 is a Late Start Day. As students arrive on campus, they should proceed directly to their classrooms. There is no Dar Trek on Late Start Days since the classrooms are open at 7:30 a.m.
On Thursday, Nov. 10, at 7 p.m., the I.T. Office will offer a workshop on “A Parent’s Role in a Student’s Digital Citizenship.” This workshop will be held on the main campus in the Upper School's Dodd Banquet Room. Cynde Reneau, instructional technology coordinator, will host this seminar for parents.
On Wednesday, Nov. 16, Patricia Ayer is offering two workshops to help parents navigate our website. This will be a “hands-on” opportunity to learn the tricks of the trade for easy navigation. The same workshop is being offered during two different time periods: 8 to 8:45 a.m. and 2 to 2:45 p.m. The workshops will take place in the Computer Lab. Since there are only 21 computers available, advance registration is required. With the cold weather upon us, please help us return your child’s sweaters, jackets, etc. by making sure that his or her name is on the article of clothing. Also on Saturday, don’t forget to “fall back” one hour since Daylight Savings Time will end.
