Purple Tie Affair: Why Are We Fundraising When We Pay Tuition?
By Tannika King - Faculty
We hope you've marked your calendars for this year's Purple Tie Affair: Tigers & 'Tails on Aug. 13. In this blog, current parent Jennifer Scott, a member of the Purple Tie Committee, shares a few of the many things our parent organizations are able to do to support our students thanks to the proceeds raised by this annual event.
Darlington School is fortunate to have an abundance of student experiences. In addition to tuition-supported opportunities, our parent organizations are generous supporters of many extra initiatives to make student activities special.
Rather than pepper parents with numerous requests for donations as needs arise, the booster clubs have chosen to unite their fundraising efforts through the Purple Tie Affair. This year’s Tigers & ’Tails event hopes to raise $ 115,000 to fund the budgets of four organizations: the Fine Arts Booster Club, the Athletic Booster Club, Upper School Tiger Pride and ELA-8 Tiger Pride.
As you consider attending the Purple Tie Affair: Tigers & ’Tails and participating in our auctions and raffles, I hope you will find excitement in the many ways your support impacts campus life and the overall student experience.
Proceeds from last year’s fundraiser benefited students at all levels in dozens of ways. Here’s a snapshot:
Celebration
From class parties and Grand/Special Day in ELA-5 to middle school socials, the Halloween Parade, Prom, Commencement, Homecoming, honors days and RUMPUS, Purple Tie proceeds make Darlington a fun place for our students to grow.
Appreciation
A portion of parent organization budgets is used to recognize and appreciate the various professionals that impact our students through teacher awards, faculty grants, birthday acknowledgements and holiday gifts.
Participation
Funds from Purple Tie are used to offset participation expenses associated with field trips, uniforms for sports teams, fine arts festivals and tournaments.
Recreation
Parent organizations designate funds to support Field Day, the ELA-8 Kickball Tournament, team equipment purchases and repairs, sports facility upgrades, and training resources to keep our Tigers strong and athletic.
Tigers & ’Tails is guaranteed to be a fun-filled occasion, but as you can see, the benefits of participation will continue long after the conclusion of the event on Aug. 13.
