Pridemore exhibits photography at RACA Gallery

Ben Pridemore will show new work in a photography exhibition titled “One Man’s Journey: Part I” at Rome Area Council for the Arts (RACA) through the end of September. The reception for the artist is Thursday, Sept. 23, from 7 to 9 p.m.
“One Man’s Journey” consists of 37 photographs from sub-Saharan Africa, Newfoundland and the western United States. Pridemore is showing is work in a solo exhibit at RACA for the second time.
Born and raised in Nashville, Tenn., Pridemore received a Bachelor of Arts from Peabody College and a DDS degree from the University of Tennessee College of Dentistry. He then served two years as a Captain in the U.S. Army Dental Corps in Germany, where he first became interested in photography. His first photographs were taken with a German-made, fixed lens, Voightlander camera. After his military service, Pridemore returned to the University of Tennessee to earn a Master of Science in Orthodontics. He has been practicing in Rome for 35 years.
Pridemore’s hobbies include wildlife and nature photography, hiking, snow skiing, mountain biking and travel. He has traveled to over 40 countries and has given lectures and hands-on instruction on wildlife and nature photography to civic groups and schools. Pridemore is active in his church and has participated in mission trips to Russia and the Ukraine, and has led a dental team to villages on the Amazon River in Brazil.
Pridemore’s interest in wildlife and nature photography has taken him on an interesting and amazing journey. Many of the animals he has been able to observe and capture on film are endangered, and he hopes that his images will help to document their beauty, as well as the beauty of their rapidly diminishing habitat.
During his trip to Newfoundland last month, Pridemore experimented with infrared for the first time, which he said has opened up a new dimension in photography for him. Four infrared photographs are included in the exhibit.
According to Pridemore, he uses only digital SLR camera backs, which enable him to interchange all of his lenses from wide angle to telephoto. He prints all of his images at home, using what he calls the “digital desktop darkroom.”
Pridemore acknowledges the assistance of Kurt Pchinger for “the many hours he has spent with me on the computer,” and his mentors Tom Murphy, George Lepp and Tim Grey for “their encouragement, help and friendship over the years.”
Pridemore is the father of Sallye Shiflett (’81) and the grandfather of Addie Shiflett (’12) and Blakeney Spong (’06).
Admission to “One Man’s Journey” is free. The exhibit is on display Aug. 30 to Sept. 30, at the RACA Gallery, located at 217 East First Street in historic downtown Rome. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and by appointment. For more information, call RACA at 706-295-ARTS.
