Pre-kindergarten studies animals

In keeping with the Darlington mission statement, pre-kindergarten teachers Beth Smith and Anne Sommerville are involving their students in activities ranging from academics to community improvement. The intellectual goals of the mission statement include stimulating a lifelong passion for learning and nurturing intellectual curiosity, self-expression, creativity, and exploration. These goals are being met as students learn about the letters of the alphabet, one of the first steps in the writing process. As for moral and social duties of the mission statement, students are learning to serve and respect others and care for the community around them.
As a way of benefiting the community, the pre-k sponsors a family for Christmas each year. This year the pre-k raised over $400, which was used to purchase gifts and cook a Christmas meal for a family in need. In order to raise the money, each child collected $10 to aid in paying for the families gifts.
Also adding to their busy schedules was “S” week. Kim Kilgore, a wild life specialist from the Arrowhead Environmental Center, visited pre-kindergarten and brought in snakes, salamanders, stuffed squirrels, and skunk skins for the children to admire while learning about the letter “S.”
