Pre-K cooks for homeless

Beth Smith’s pre-kindergartners have been learning this year that a lot of love and caring goes into a good home-cooked meal, even though until recently they did not know for whom they were cooking. The students have been cooking dinner once a month for the William S. Davies Homeless Shelter.
But then Burch Givens asked one day, “When are we going on a field trip to the shelter to take our food and see who we are helping?” Smith knew it was time to show the students where their meals have been delivered.
The class did not go empty-handed, however. The kids wanted to make surprises for the men and leave them on their beds. They brought bus passes, Chapstick, umbrellas, gloves, candy, and Valentine cards. “It was so rewarding to see them carefully place the goodies on the beds,” Smith said. “I know there were lots of smiles and warm hearts that night as the men found their treats.”
