Powell signs with FSU

Shawn Powell, the All-State punter for Darlington, signed with Florida State [Feb. 7] as both football and basketball coaches congratulated the multi-sport athlete.
Powell becomes the second straight Tiger to sign with FSU. Last year, Ryan McMahon signed on to play defensive tackle for the Seminoles.
“Florida State had shown the most interest in him for the longest time,” Tiger coach Tommy Atha said of Powell. “Having signed Ryan last year, we kept in contact with them and they were aware of Shawn even then. At the end of the day, when he went down there for his visit, Florida State was where his heart was the whole time.”
Powell received a "gray shirt" deferred scholarship, meaning that he’ll skip the upcoming season and start classes at Florida State next January. He’ll then be able to go through an entire spring practice period and summer workout session before the beginning of his first full season.
"So I'll be a Seminole, I guess," Powell said. "But I'll still be a Tiger until I leave Darlington."
Powell is the son of Larry Powell of Rome and Kellie Powell of Indialantic, Fla.
