Powell selected as AP Reader

This June, David Powell will join 11,000 college faculty and AP teachers from around the world in evaluating and scoring approximately 10 million free-response answers on AP Exams for The College Board.
“The careful evaluation of students’ work by qualified professionals is one of the most important aspects of the AP Program,” said Trevor Packer, vice president of the Advanced Placement Program. “The program’s acknowledged success is due to an evaluation and scoring process that reflects the high standards of faculty members who, by virtue of their experience and expertise, have appropriate student performance expectations within their respective disciplines.”
AP Readers must currently teach the AP course for which they are evaluating exams in a face-to-face classroom setting and have at least three years of experience teaching that course. Scoring will take place at five different locations around the country in June.
“First, we will be trained in grading this year’s essays, then grade for seven days until all essays are completed,” said Powell, Thatcher Chair of English, who has served as an AP Reader six times previously. “Reading exams allows me to keep up with a network of other professionals who share ideas about teaching.”
