Peer to coach men’s lacrosse

Matthew Peer, Darlington’s director of student life, has been named men’s JV and varsity lacrosse coach.

“I am very excited to be given the opportunity to lead the men’s lacrosse program here at Darlington,” Peer said. “As the varsity and junior varsity coach, I look forward to starting a new chapter in the program’s history and building upon its past successes.”

Peer joined Darlington’s student life staff in 2010 with nearly a decade of teaching, coaching and administrative experience under his belt. He has coached middle and high school lacrosse for nine years and holds a B.A. in Sociology from St. Lawrence University (N.Y.) and an M.A. in Liberal Studies from Wesleyan University (Ct.)

Peer came to Darlington from Avon Old Farms School in Avon, Ct., an all-boys boarding school with a top-notch lacrosse program.

“I was involved in that program for seven years, coaching the freshmen team, the varsity “B” team and working with position players from all four teams,” Peer said. “Avon’s schedule is arguably the toughest amongst all New England prep schools.”

Before Avon, he spent two years as varsity lacrosse coach at the Cardigan Mountain School, a junior boarding school in Canaan, N.H. Under the direction of some of New England’s top coaches, both past and present, Cardigan has helped produce high school and collegiate All-Americans, State and National Champions, and current professional players.

“My former players have gone on to play at some of the best Division 1 and Division 3 colleges and universities in the country,” Peer said. “One former player won a National Championship at the University of Virginia last spring. I am really looking forward to getting back into coaching and working with the young men at Darlington. This season, we will be returning a key core group of players from last year’s team and are in the process of scheduling games against the best programs in the state. It’s going to be a great year.”
