Peer Mentoring Program to launch this fall

After seeing a great deal of success with peer tutoring efforts at the Middle and Upper School in 2006-07, Darlington will launch a Peer Mentoring Program this fall. Thirty students in grades 10-12 have already volunteered to serve as mentors/tutors.
“The goal of the program is two-fold: to create an opportunity for academic leadership and role modeling and to provide an academic resource for Middle and Upper School students who struggle with school,” said Libbie Zimmer, director of the Learning Center. “I am so pleased to have 30 volunteers already. Some of these students are academically gifted and ant to share their knowledge in particular subjects, while others are students who have struggled with school most of their lives and want to share what they’ve learned to do and not to do to be successful.”
Volunteer peer mentors and tutors will work with students after school, in the evenings, and on the weekends, assisting with course content, homework, time management and organizational skills. Mentors will be matched up with their peers based on academic strengths and challenges. Community service credit will be given to any students who volunteer as mentors.
While this service is not yet available at the Lower School, Zimmer hopes that the program can be expanded to include the entire school in the near future.
