Darlington’s annual Parents Weekend on Sept. 19-20 will feature a variety of activities designed to give parents a glimpse into their child’s life at Darlington.
Friday will kick off at 8 a.m. with advisee meetings for students and parents. At 9 a.m., the Upper School community will walk over to the Huffman Center to hear from guest speaker Timothy Wang, an attorney at the law firm of Alston + Bird. Referring to the Upper School’s summer reading book “The Good Earth” as a starting point, he will speak about the history and future of relations between the United States and China.
Wang received his J.D. in 2007 from the University of Michigan, where he was an associate editor of the Michigan Law Review and co-founder and president of the Business Law Association and an active member of the Asian Pacific American Law Students Association. He holds a B.A. with concentrations in economics and East Asian studies from Harvard University, where he was the recipient of the John Harvard Scholarship for academic distinction. Additionally, he received a Certificate in Chinese Language Studies from National Taiwan University in 1999. Prior to becoming at attorney, Wang served as director of international development at the Economic Development Partnership of Alabama and director of corporate development at the Montgomery Area Chamber of Commerce.
At 10:30 a.m., everyone will gather on the second floor of the Huffman Center for a “meet and greet.” Here, parents will have the opportunity to sign up for conferences and meet advisers and teachers. Student schedules will also be available to parents at this time. Lunch will be served from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Dodd Dining Hall, after which parent-teacher conferences will take place from 1-4 p.m.
Friday evening at 5:30 p.m., families are invited to a pre-game picnic on Morris Chapel Lawn. Afterward, everyone can walk over to Chris Hunter Stadium to watch the football game (Darlington vs. Murphy High School, N.C.) Game tickets may be purchased at the gate. At halftime, parents may attend the Halftime at the Huff reception in the Yancey Suite of the Huffman Center.
Saturday morning, families are invited to a continental breakfast in Dodd Dining Hall from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Parent-teacher conferences will be held from 9:30 a.m. to noon, followed by lunch and a college meeting for parents in Morris Chapel at 1 p.m. The college meeting will provide information on both the college admission process and athletic scholarships.
Reservations are required for all meals. Online registration is now available for Upper School parents at www.darlingtonschool.org/parentsweekend. If you have questions, please contact Paige Hamil, executive assistant to the chief development officer, at 706-236-0418.
