Parent demonstrates genorosity

Lakeside Gala emcee and Darlington parent volunteer David Kleist gave the School more than his volunteer time as he emceed the auction and reverse-raffle segments of the Parents Association’s fundraising event held April 20.
While drawing for the reverse raffle, Kleist drew his own name to win the grand prize, $5,000. He tried to refuse the gift saying that he did not think it was fair for him to win since he was the person drawing the numbers. Parent volunteer Nell Ely, Emily Stuckey, Darlington’s controller, and others helping him with the raffle insisted that he keep the $5,000. After much discussion, Kleist agreed to keep half the funds but donated the funds, $2,500, to his son's, Matt, house, Barnes House. He put the other half of the winnings back in the pot for another draw. Alumni and Darlington parents Joan and Paul Brock won that drawing.
On Saturday, Barnes House bought a big-screen television among other things for the house lounge. “As a result of Mr. Kleist’s incredible generosity, it felt almost like Christmas day in our lounge on Saturday,” Head of House Reba Barnes said. “We are truly blessed.”
Darlington’s new cookbook, Through These Gates … A Taste of Darlington, was featured and available for purchase at the gala. Some of the recipes submitted for the cookbook were prepared for the evening’s dinner. Besides the dinner, cookbook unveiling, and reverse raffle drawing, the Parents Association also held a small auction.
