Ortegas lead summer trip to Spain

Darlington faculty members Carlos and Marisa Ortega see little difference between Darlington students and their own children: they brought both along on a summer trip to Spain. Samantha and Gabriel Ortega traveled along with six Darlington students and two Holy Innocents students to the inaugural Summer Study Program in Spain.
The students spent two weeks in San Sebastian, living with Spanish families and attending Spanish classes in the morning at Lacunza-International House. Conducted all in Spanish, the classes focused on improving the fluency of the students. The experience of living in Spain was educational for the students, as they had to eat the meals at home and respect the customs of the families they stayed with.
“After our stay in San Sebastian, we toured Spain for one week,” Carlos Ortega explained. “Although our schedule was hectic, we saw some wonderful sights. Starting in Madrid, we visited El Prado and La Reina Sofia, two excellent museums with famous masterpieces. We also took a couple of day trips to Segovia to see El Alcazar and to Toledo to visit La Catedral. Then we traveled south to Cordoba, where we admired the size and beauty of La Mezquita.”
“From there, we traveled to Granada, where we enjoyed a nocturnal view of La Alhambra from the restaurant Carmen Verde Luna. The trip ended in Sevilla with an afternoon climb to the top of La Giralda, where we admired a magnificent view of the city, and that night we marveled at the footwork of the flamenco dancers. It was a great trip and we all had so much fun experiencing the Spanish culture.”
The Darlington students on the trip were Joy Andrew ‘01, Amy McRae ’01, senior Stephanie Doerner, juniors Paul Kountz and Garrett Manis, and sophomore Jenny Morris. The Holy Innocents students were Tara Bender and Erin Yelich.
