Orr ('17) to compete in Governor's Honors Program

Darlington junior Emily Orr has been chosen as a state level semi-finalist in the "Communicative Arts" category for the Georgia Governor's Honors Program, and will take part in an interview this weekend in Locust Grove, Ga., to determine if she moves to the next round.
The Georgia Governor’s Honors Program (GHP) recognizes outstanding rising juniors and seniors in high school each summer, in a month-long residential enrichment program designed to provide detailed instruction in a specified course of study. Students take part in classroom time and different educational opportunities each day, meant to significantly contribute to the overall experience on an academic, cultural and social level. GHP takes place on a Georgia college or university campus.
Orr has several family members that have participated in GHP, and chose the "Communicative Arts" path after discovering her love for journalism as a Darlington student. Last year she completed the school's Journalism course, and is currently taking Introduction to Media Arts. She serves as the managing editor of The Darlingtonian, Student Publications' online newspaper, and has been a recipient of the Inkslinger Adviser's Award for her work on Darlington's literary magazine.
"If selected [for the program], I will hopefully end this coming summer secure in my interests, greatly aware of my potential, and ready to build upon our growing journalism program here at Darlington," said Orr.
In addition to her coursework and involvement in student media, she has attended the Media Now STL High School Digital Media Summer Camp and the National High School Journalism Convention, where she received an honorable mention award in the review writing competition.
The junior holds membership in the National Honor Society and Sociedad Honoraria Nacional de El Coronel. She is also a member of the Greater Rome Chamber of Commerce's current High School Leadership Rome class. By the end of the 2015-16 school year, she will have taken 10 AP and Honors courses at Darlington.
Ultimately, Orr hopes to find a career in journalism or law following college graduation.
She is the daughter of Arlene Johnson-Orr of Rome.
