Orientation Weekend begins Aug. 14

Darlington Upper School boarding and day students will be back on campus beginning Saturday, Aug. 14, for Orientation Weekend activities.
Saturday from 8 to 9:30 a.m., resident and new day students will report to their Head of House and pick up their 2004-05 class schedules. All resident and new day students, including all ninth graders, their parents and faculty, will attend an opening meeting at 10 a.m. in Morris Chapel. This meeting will be followed by a registration questions session in McCallie-Kennedy Library and lunch at 11:45 in Dodd Dining Room. After lunch, students and parents will have the opportunity to attend “Mini-School” classes to meet faculty and advisers, from 12:30 to 2:45 p.m. At 3 p.m., resident parents and students will attend Opening House meetings.
From 5:30 to 7 p.m., all students meet in their Houses, while parents and faculty are invited to a reception at the Home-on-the-Hill, the historic home of Darlington Interim President James P. Hendrix Jr. At 7 p.m., a formal dinner will be held at Johnson Field House, to be followed by a Presidential Address in the Van Es Arena of Darlington’s A.J. Huffman ’67 Memorial Athletic Center. Entertainment will be provided by the fine arts department.
Sunday morning, resident students and parents are invited to light breakfast in the individual Houses at 10 a.m. Opening chapel service will follow in Morris Chapel, after which lunch will be provided in Dodd Dining Room. From 1 to 2 p.m., senior parents will attend the Senior Parents College Program. Junior parents are also welcome. During this time, students will meet with their individual Houses until 4 p.m.
Preparation for the Fourth Annual House Olympics will begin at 4:30 p.m., and festivities will begin at 5:30 p.m. at Chris Hunter Stadium. Resident students compete, but day students are also welcome. Parents may attend to cheer for their students’ House. The Olympics will be followed by a cookout on the Huffman Center Patio from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m.
Monday will begin with an opening assembly at 8:10 a.m. in Morris Chapel. Classes will begin at 9:30 a.m., with an abbreviated class schedule for the day.
