Old School vs. New School: Faculty beat students in softball challenge

Members of the varsity football team stepped out of their comfort zone this weekend to play a group of faculty members in a softball game on Oct. 9. The name of the game? Old School versus New School … and Old School came out on top with a final score of 37 to 21.
“I think it’s wonderful that we get to connect with the students in a wide variety of settings,” said English teacher John Cox. “The closer a bond you can develop, the better off you are as a teacher. This kind of event is invaluable for strengthening the student-teacher relationship.”
Bill King, band director, agreed. “I think doing events like this draw the students and faculty and staff closer and can only help the overall atmosphere through friendly rivalry and just plain fun,” he said. “Daniel Hicks should be commended for initiating the game. More of this needs to be done”
Faculty noted Kevin Allen and Pete Bergen as key players on their team.
“Kevin Allen from Aramark was probably the MVP,” said Hicks, director of student activities. “He hit at least four home runs and played defense like a pro. Head of House Pete Bergen also had a great game.”
LeAnne Mann, English teacher, said the towering home runs by Allen and Bergen kept the faculty in the lead. “The students seemed overwhelmed and awed,” she said. “I don’t know if they want to get ‘walloped’ again.”
But Cox is sure there will be another game in the near future. “They didn’t expect to lose, and yes, there will be a rematch,” he said.
