During this school year, Darlington School is seeking out community partnerships to address growing needs in the areas of wellness and life fitness among all of our constituencies.

The school's goal in creating this program is twofold: (1) to provide targeted and positive life skills assistance for those students who find themselves grappling with issues of substance abuse, relationships, depression, anxiety, sexuality or other common and treatable emotional/behavioral challenges and (2) to implement a cutting-edge approach to lifetime fitness built upon the philosophy that the body and mind work together and can influence each other.

"Research is telling us today that through education and specific programming to promote total wellness, individuals can reduce their risk for the development of both medical and behavioral health problems," said Associate Headmaster Mark Carleton. "Additionally, wellness and preventative health interventions can play a critical role in reducing the development of physical and mental disorders."

As a kick-off for this initiative, Darlington will host highly regarded educator and author Deborah Roffman for a community presentation Sunday, Aug. 10 from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in Morris Chapel. Roffman is nationally respected for her work on the topics of healthy relationships, connecting with young people, and identifying and confronting at-risk behavior, and currently teaches at The Park School in Baltimore, Md.

Roffman has provided training and consultation regarding curriculum, faculty development, and parent education to scores of public and private schools since 1975. She has presented hundreds of workshops for parents and teachers, and frequently makes presentations at schools and conferences throughout the United States and abroad. Her work in the classroom and with parents has been featured in the New York Times, Baltimore Sun, Washington Post, Chicago Tribune, Boston Globe, Los Angeles Times, Education Week, Teacher Magazine, USA Today, Parents Magazine, an HBO Special on parenting, and on NPR. She has also appeared on “Nightline” with Ted Koppel, “The Early Show” with Bryant Gumbel, and on “The O’Reilly Factor.” Please click here to read Roffman’s most recent article, which was published in the Fall 2007 issue of Independent School magazine.

"Over the last several years, Darlington has made significant efforts to bring quality speakers and resources to our community because we know it is a good investment for our children, our families and the future of our school," said Carleton. "We enthusiastically ask you to invite your friends, family and anyone who cares about children to join us Sunday, Aug. 10 to hear Deborah Roffman. Whether your child is entering pre-kindergarten or college, every parent can gain knowledge and skills to help raise more self-aware and successful children."
