New Principal Discusses Upcoming Year

With the strongest enrollment we’ve ever had, a brand new Spanish program, and a 100 percent return of our marvelous faculty, the Lower School is prime for a fabulous year.
We expect 255 students at registration on Aug. 21, topping last year’s enrollment by 10 students. It is wonderful to see that so many more families recognize the importance of investing in their children’s education during the elementary school years, and we are appreciative of each of our current families who continue to put their trust in Darlington to make sure their sons and daughters have that first-rate foundation. Our re-enrollment topped 95 percent, which makes a strong statement about the outstanding job our teachers are doing in the classroom.
Habla Espanol? Parents better start learning to if you don’t already because your children will be. Adding Spanish to the curriculum is a dream-come-true for the Lower School, and we have a dynamite teacher to kick off this exciting program. Barbara Barfield will be going into classrooms three times a week (twice for kindergarten and pre-kindergarten), teaching our students to speak Spanish. After visiting a number of elementary schools last year that offer a foreign language, I think we’ll all be amazed by the enthusiasm our students will have for learning Spanish.
What’s most important, though, is that all of our students will be supported by teachers who love them and believe in them. Of course, our goals are for each student to be challenged academically, make good grades, score well on the Educational Records Bureau (ERB), and be ready for the next level. However, in this 180-day journey of the 1999-2000 school year, we all want to see children who enjoy coming to school and with each passing day develop greater confidence in themselves. Let’s get started!
