New instructors learn from experience

Instructors who are new to the Middle School and Upper School or who are new teaching a particular subject have the benefit of mentors to help them acclimate. “The mentors orient the new faculty to the curriculum and help set expectations,” Headmaster David Rhodes said.
Mentors meet periodically with new faculty focusing specifically on less experienced instructors and those new to Darlington. The new faculty will also have three meetings with Rhodes and a team of administrators, including Sam Moss, associate headmaster and dean of college guidance; Sally Rudert, academic dean; Jill Pate, director of student counseling; Betsy Awsumb, director of international students; and Gordon Neville, associate headmaster and dean of students.
“Heads of departments will help new faculty learn how to make out a test, how to determine the appropriate amount of material to cover in each course, and will share tests and syllabi,” Rhodes said. “The new faculty will learn by example.”
New instructors and their mentors follow: in Upper School, Betsy Awsumb (first time teaching Ancient World History) by Craig Schmidt, Stephanie Chastain by David Powell and Jason Childs, Greg Foreman by Fran Buice, Gordon Lee Hight by Tim Foote, Tyler Hitch by Craig Schmidt, Brian Inman by Craig Schmidt, Robert Meaney by Bob McGraw, Charlotte Saxon by Carlos Ortega, Nathalie Nicolay-Welch by Randa Mixon, and Jason Yelton by Craig Schmidt; in Middle School, James Hutchins by Phil Titus, Mitch Jordan by Tommy Atha, Shana Pardue by Carlos Ortega, Joey Rice, by Tommy Atha, and Jason Turner by Tommy Atha.
