New Faculty Hired for 2000-2001

Through April 24, Darlington has hired five new faculty for the 2000-2001 academic year.
John Cox will return to Darlington as an English instructor. Cox, who has taught at Darlington’s Summer Session the past two summers, has eight years of teaching experience: a year at Shorecrest Preparatory School in St. Petersburg, Fla., four at Rome’s Berry College, where he taught Freshman Composition, and three at the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth, where he taught Technical Communications and Freshman Composition. Cox is a 1991 graduate of Southeastern Massachusetts University and has a master’s in professional writing from the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth.
Leslie Higgins, who will graduate from the University of the South in May with a degree in history, will teach Ancient and Modern World History at Darlington next year. Her prior work experience includes research at the Atlanta History Center and coaching varsity cheerleading at Saint Andrew’s Sewanee, in Sewanee, Tenn. A recipient of the University of the South’s Order of Gownsmen, Higgins has been active in community service, working with an outreach program in Honduras. She has also studied at the Anthropological Field School in Dorf Tirol, Italy.
Angie Milford, currently professor of health education and head basketball and golf coach at Oglethorpe University in Atlanta, will teach Middle School physical education and coach varsity girls basketball. Formerly assistant basketball coach and physical education and heath instructor for four years at Shorter College in Rome, Milford won 18 victories in a single season at Shorter, the team’s best record in 13 seasons, and won more victories in a season (12) than Oglethorpe’s women’s basketball program had ever experienced. At Auburn University, where she graduated in 1994, Milford went to the NCAA Women’s Final Four in 1990 with her team, which finished National Runner-Up. Milford’s husband, James, who works for Computer Consulting Services of Rome, is frequently on campus to service Darlington’s computer network.
Craig Bennett, a history and geography teacher at Georgia’s Haralson County and Pope High Schools the past four years, will join Darlington next year to teach U.S. History and coach varsity football and track. A graduate of the State University of West Georgia, Bennett has had extensive experience teaching social studies in an interactive way. After completing a History Alive! training course, he initiated a History Alive! U.S. History program at Pope High School. From 1997-1999, he was defensive backs and special teams coordinator to the varsity football team, which won the 1998 6AAAA region championship. He also coached basketball and track at Pope.
Larry Johnson will teach Chemistry I and Biology at Darlington next year. Director of Camp Skyline Ranch in Mentone, Ala., for the past four years, Johnson taught Physical Science, Biology, and Chemistry at Cherokee High School in Canton, Ga., and Wheeler High School in Marietta, Ga., from 1992-97. Johnson, who will be head varsity wrestling coach and a varsity football coach, was head wrestling coach at Cherokee, where his team secured more team wins in his first year than in the school’s previous three combined. At both Cherokee and Wheeler, he served as an assistant football coach, special teams coordinator, and defensive ends/ linebacker coach. Johnson is a 1991 graduate of Florida State University, where he played varsity football for two years. Johnson’s wife, Sally Cash, is a 1987 graduate of Darlington.
