Neville announces updated dress standard

Associate Headmaster and Dean of Students Gordon Neville '55 introduced this week the following updated dress standard for all Upper School students, to be enforced effective immediately:
Upper School Dress Standard (revised 4/4/02)
Darlington has three dress standards which are to be applied to three different types of occasions: formal dress, classroom or school day dress, and casual dress.
Formal Dress
Formal dress is to be worn by all students during the entire school day (until 3:20 p.m.) on Wednesdays and other days when special chapel services are held. Resident students are to wear formal attire for Sunday church (campus or town), certain vespers services, and for occasional formal dinners. Students officially representing Darlington at any extracurricular event will be required to follow the formal dress standard during that day.
Classroom or school day dress is to be worn throughout every school day, except Wednesdays, when Formal dress is required. This will also be the expected standard for the Sunday noon meal.
Casual dress is acceptable after school hours, during weekends, and at evening meals.
Hats, caps, or bandanas will not be permitted in the dining hall or chapel.
At all times student are expected to be neat in their dress and personal appearance.
Earrings
The House Senate is reviewing the dress standard and will present a proposal to the Executive Committee for it to approve as effective for the next school year. For the remainder of this school year, however, the above dress standard will apply.

For Girls
Dresses, skirts and blouses, or dressy slacks and blouses, suitable for formal occasions, and dress shoes are to be worn.
For BoysSchool day Dress
For most formal occasions, boys shall wear a dress shirt and tie, dress slacks, and appropriate dress shoes.
Classroom or school day dress is to be worn throughout every school day, except Wednesdays, when Formal dress is required. This will also be the expected standard for the Sunday noon meal.
For Girls
Girls should wear dresses, skirts, split-skirts, slacks, oxford-type shirts, shirts with a finished neck, dress knit shirts, blouses, and appropriate footwear. Shirttails and blouses must be completely tucked in at all times. “Designer blouses” with short finished hems may be worn untucked so long as they are long enough to cover the waistband of a skirt or pants and not allow exposure of bare midriffs. Belts must be worn with pants and skirts which have belt loops. Sweatshirts (without hoods) are acceptable wear, provided a shirt with a collar is worn underneath.
Girls are not allowed to wear the following for school day dress: jeans, strapless dresses or tops, tank tops, spaghetti strap tops, leotard tops, bare midriffs, jean overalls, shorts, skirts above mid-thigh, clothes that are too tight or revealing, hats, caps or bandanas. Athletic jerseys, t-shirts, camouflage or fatigue pants, skirts or shirts are not allowed.
Shoes must be clean and in good repair. Appropriate sandals and clogs are allowed during the school day. However, athletic shoes, flip flops, Birkenstock, Teva, Reef, and other sport sandals are not.
For BoysCasual Dress
Boys should wear neat slacks, oxford-type shirts, knit shirts (with collars), socks, and appropriate footwear. Shirttails must be completely tucked in at all times. Belts must be worn with pants which have belt loops. Sweatshirts (without hoods) are acceptable, provided a shirt with a collar is worn underneath.
Boys are not to wear the following during the school day: jeans, t-shirts, tank shirts, hats, caps or bandanas, jean overalls, shorts, golf or tennis socks, fatigue pants or camouflage pants or shirts.
Shoes must be clean, in good repair, and laced or buckled. Clogs are allowed during the school day. However, athletic shoes, flip flops, Birkenstock, Teva, Reef, and other sport sandals are not.
Casual dress is acceptable after school hours, during weekends, and at evening meals.

Since body piercing is not permitted, girls are limited to one, and only one, ring per ear and such will be worn in the earlobe.
For BoysNote: Dress Standard violations will result in an assigned penalty.
