Network Day Service Center holds major fundraiser

The Network Day Service Center, a local private, non-profit United Way affiliate is currently holding its annual Pansy Sale fundraiser through Tuesday, Oct. 5. For 50 years, the organization has been charged with providing skilled training, supported employment, case management and follow-along services to persons with mental retardation who live in Floyd County, to help them become more independent and self sufficient.
“[The Center] is truly a special place with very special people working there for the betterment of life for these people who are often forgotten by society,” said Sandy Yeargan, past president of the Network Day Service Center Board. “The Pansy Sale benefits to help in our construction of a special healing garden within our courtyard, which is going to give the clients a place to go outside and enjoy the beauty of nature, as well as a place to go and sit, perhaps have lunch or just go there to bring contentment and happiness to their lives.”
Pansies are available for $15 per flat, two flats for $28, and may be custom-ordered. Violas are also available. Prepaid orders must be placed by Oct. 5, and pick-up day is Thursday, Oct. 14, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Center (located at 204 W. 10th Street). To place an order, call the Center at 706-291-2580, or call Ginger Grant, chairperson for the sale, at 706-232-2879.
“These are, without doubt, the most beautiful, healthy pansies I’ve ever seen,” said Dr. Renva Watterson, Network Day Service Center Board member. “They come from Alabama from a grower who has been bringing them to us for years.”
Network Day Service Center, Inc., had its origin in 1954 as United Cerebral Palsy of Rome and Northwest Georgia, Inc., at the present site. In July of 1977, RCW Industries was started to provide employment opportunities and operated until July of 1986, when Sheltered Work Service of Rome assumed administrative responsibility. The private, non-profit agency, managed by a board of directors, was reincorporated in 1989 under the name Network Associates, Inc., to reflect a more positive image for persons with mental retardation. In 1998, the name of the agency was changed to Network Day Service Center, Inc. Services are partially funded by the Georgia Department of Human Resources through the Region 1 Planning Unit of the Division of MHDDAD and partially funded by Medicaid Waivers. Approximately 54 consumers are served annually. In July of 2002, the Center received a second three-year accreditation from CARF, the National Rehabilitation Accreditation Commission, in Employment Services and Personal and Social Services.
