National Merit Scholarship Corporation Selects Moss

Sam Moss, dean of studies and college guidance, was invited to be a member of the 2001 National Merit Scholarship Selection Committee, which met from Jan. 21, through Jan. 25. The committee’s task was to select the 2,500 winners of the National Merit $2500 Scholarships to be awarded in 2001.
The decisions were made by evaluating and analyzing each Finalists’ academic record, standardized test scores, personal essay, leadership, involvement, and written recommendations. The committee evaluated the folders of 16,000 finalists. Moss and his partner read 2607 folders from 14 states.
Moss’s fellow committee members included four other secondary school officials and various deans and directors of admission from the University of the South, Indiana University, Tufts University, Middlebury College, University of Oregon, Macalester College, University of Richmond, John Hopkins University Medical School, and Winthrop University.
The National Merit Scholarship Corporation has sent a letter not only to thank Moss for his challenging and rewarding task, but also to invite him to return next year.
