“A great library provides. It is enmeshed in the life of a community in a way that makes it indispensable. A great library is one nobody notices because it is always there, and always has what people need.” -Vicki Myron

As much as I like and identify with that quote, I would like to amend that statement and apply it to Darlington: our library does those things, and people have definitely noticed.

On a daily basis, the Upper School's McCallie-Kennedy Library is a hub of activity—students come in during their free periods and stay for the full measure of the period, not because they have nowhere else to go (especially on beautiful, sunny days), but because they like being there.

I asked a couple of students why they spent so much of their time in the library, the answers varied from, “There really is no better place to study with a group of people than in the library;” “I can come in, sit down in a comfortable space, and get my work done—or see my friends…sometimes both;” and simply, “The library is my happy place.”

National Library Week, which is April 14-21, calls to attention the reality of what a library does for people. The physical library and the digital library have the potential to be whatever a person needs them to be. That is why the library continues to be relevant in a world that upgrades and updates so frequently; it moves and adapts to the world in which it exists.

The librarians in McCallie Kennedy Library just want to take this opportunity to remind everyone that we are here for you. Stop by and see us!
