Music adds broad lesson

Lower School music classes are going beyond just making a joyful noise. The new Hymn of the Month program is being introduced to expand the student’s knowledge about the composers and stories behind these songs of worship.
Diane Lumpkin, Lower School music instructor and lead teacher, plans to use the program to build the musical heritage of the students going through Darlington School. “These hymns will be used to develop singing skills and attitudes that will encourage students to use their voices as lifelong instruments,” Lumpkin said.
The addition of this study will benefit students as they continue into upper grades at Darlington. Curriculum is designed to flow from one grade level to the next, and this program helps achieve this structure.
Kim Tunnell, Middle School chorus instructor, feels that the Lower School music program builds a strong foundation for the Middle School music curriculum. “I think the hymn study is a wonderful idea of tying music history and faith together,” Tunnell explained. “This easily transfers to the study of the Middle Ages and the fact that our early music was sacred music.” Tunnell added that she is impressed with the students she is teaching this year that went through the Lower School music program.
