Moss receives highest college admission counseling award

Associate Headmaster and Dean of College Guidance Sam Moss ’63 was presented with the Larry West Award during the Annual Conference of the Southern Association of College Admission Counseling (SACAC) held in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., in late April. The award is the highest given to a member of SACAC.
Based on longevity of service, dedication to SACAC, outstanding contributions to the admission counseling profession, leadership within that profession, and dedication to the students the organization serves, the award is named in memory of Larry West, former SACAC president, Admission Practices chair, and extraordinary counseling professional. SACAC promotes high professional standards in the college admission process for over 1,650 colleges, universities, and secondary schools in the nine-state Southern region.
In presenting the award, Beckett Howorth, SACAC president and director of admission for the University of Mississippi, said, “We’ve all heard of ‘six degrees of separation from Kevin Bacon,’ but for anyone who has been in SACAC for any length of time there is only ‘one degree from Sam Moss.’ He has touched all or us with his personality and professionalism and made us all enjoy what we do more.”
Moss has been at Darlington for 20 years. He holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of the South, Sewanee and a master’s degree from Jacksonville University with additional study at Oxford University. He is past president of SACAC and past member of the Executive Board of the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC). Moss currently serves on the Credentials Committee of the NACAC and on the National Merit Scholarship Selection Committee.
