Moss, Neville now associate headmasters

Darlington School has conferred the title of associate headmaster upon two of its faculty members, Dean of Studies and College Guidance Sam Moss and Dean of Students Gordon Neville.
“These men were given the titles as a way of the School telling them how much it appreciates their great work and years of service,” Headmaster David Rhodes explained. “When I think of Darlington School and what it stands for, I think of these men.”
“As far as working together, [Moss and Neville] have been my right and left hands,” Rhodes said. “They have a longstanding history with Darlington, both as students and as faculty and administration members. Mr. Moss and Mr. Neville have influenced and contributed to the lives of a countless number of students.”
Moss and Neville have received the titles as recognition of their dedication to Darlington. Their duties will remain the same, and they will retain their current titles.
Moss graduated from Darlington in 1963 and has been a faculty member at Darlington for 18 years. He earned a bachelor’s in English from The University of the South in 1967, and after studying at Lincoln College in Oxford University, England, for the summer, he spent the next 15 years at Episcopal High School in Jacksonville, Fla., of which he was a founding faculty member. He received a master’s in English from Jacksonville University in 1981 and returned to Darlington in 1982. He has served Darlington as dean of studies and college guidance, Summer Session principal, Curriculum Committee chair, and an Upper School English instructor. He has also served as president of the Southern Association for College Admission Counseling and has been on the Executive Board of the National Association for College Admission Counseling, the National Merit Scholarship Selection Committee, and the Executive Board of the Rome Symphony Orchestra.
Neville graduated from Darlington in 1955 and has been a faculty member for 39 years. Born in Atlanta to missionaries with Southern Presbyterian Church, he grew up in Brazil and attended Darlington as a boarding student. After receiving a bachelor’s in economics from Davidson College in 1959 and a master’s degree in education from West Georgia College in Carrollton, in 1961, he returned to Darlington. He has taught math at the Upper School and the Middle School, geography, and Bible. He has also served the School as business manager, and coach for Middle School football and basketball and Upper School track. Neville has coached soccer at Darlington for 27 years and has been dean of students for seven years. And the tradition of a Darlington education in the Neville family continues – he and his wife Betsy have had three children graduate from Darlington.
