Moss (’63) receives national award

Sam Moss (’63), Darlington’s dean of college guidance, received the prestigious Margaret E. Addis Service to NACAC Award this weekend during the National Association of College Admission Counselors’ 65th Annual Conference in Baltimore, Md.
Established in 1996, the award honors a longtime, respected leader of NACAC who has provided the association with unique and outstanding service and has been committed to ensuring ethical practices.
“In more than 30 years in the field of college counseling, Sam has preserved his passion for counseling students, approaching his life’s work with unmatched enthusiasm,” said Bill McClintick, president of NACAC. “From his first counseling post as director of college guidance at the Episcopal School in Jacksonville to his current position at Darlington, he has been a careful custodian of NACAC’s Statement of Principles and Good Practice.”
Since his first role with the Southern Association for College Admission Counseling (SACAC) as a member of the Admission Practices Committee in 1985, Moss has dedicated himself to securing a working environment for his colleagues that allows for and encourages the ethical treatment of students in the admission process. After serving on the AP Committee for 10 years, he returned in 2003 where he remains as a member to this day.
“As a member of the Southern Regional Council and chairman of the Guidance and Admission Assembly, Sam built many bridges between NACAC, SACAC and The College Board,” McClintick continued. “As a member of admissions and scholarship advisory and review boards, he donated his invaluable experience and knowledge to Davidson College, Rhodes College, Furman University, the University of Miami and the University of Georgia. With his industrious pursuit of helping students and colleagues, it is no wonder that this is not his first award.”
In 2002, Moss was named the first recipient of SACAC’s Larry West Award for outstanding contributions to the admissions counseling profession and leadership within that profession. Moss holds a bachelor’s degree from the University of the South (Sewanee, Tenn.) and a master’s from Jacksonville University (Fla.) He also completed additional study at Oxford University in England.
